Lab Description: The Broome County Urban League (BCUL) is a multi-ethnic representation of the region's population. The BCUL provides services and programs to over 500 constituents and their families annually. Programs such as Family Support Services, provides support to families with mental retardation, and developmental disabilities. The Youth Services program provides academic support to improve scholastic achievement for youngsters who have been classified as at-risk youth. ATTAIN provides academic and vocational workforce training that complements the services and supports the goals of the BCUL.
The BCUL has maintained their focus on work readiness and job training by continuing to build solid relationships between the educational community and community based organizations. The State University at Binghamton has provided three student interns each semester from the Computer Science Department to assist with the daily operation of the lab. Broome County Community College and the Chairperson of the Computer Science Department are discussing a new initiative to bring credit baring courses to the ATTAIN lab. The goal is to begin offering courses as part of their curriculum. Collaborations with Workforce One and the LDSS continue to provide referrals to the lab for digital literacy and work readiness training, in addition to the Microsoft certification courses. The BCUL has built relationships with community based organizations such as Experience Works, Fairview Recoveries, VINES Project, and Gang Prevention Program to provide training services to their clients.
